Our 150-year-old Barn

After years of gardening in our small backyard, I decided to take my hobby-passion and turn it into my job-passion. So, in the summer of 2022, we sold our house and started a flower farm, without any real idea of what that entails.

I uprooted, along with my husband and kids and moved from New York to Newtown, Connecticut. In this second career, I found myself nestled in a little valley with three acres of land, a one hundred-and fifty-year-old barn, and a lot of bats.

A big change from our previous property of 1/3 of an acre. My dream quickly transformed into a family affair as we learned that we all enjoyed farming, even our dogs. I decided that our main crop was going to be peony flowers.

I planted my first peony over seventeen years ago, when my mother-in-law gave me a piece of her plant. The flowers are big and bold, and truly make a statement, similar to my dream of flower farming.

So, I purchased 4,600 roots, and planted them one hole, one root at a time. And with the help of my husband and his now aching back, my parents’ unwavering support, and a lot of Advil, we managed to get all the roots planted before the ground froze.

With this farming adventure now started, and the revelation that my entire family loves farming, we are hoping to bring our new found happiness to our community, flower by flower.
